2022-02-15 - individual fine-tuning for the Big Boxer

BMW R18 conversion by Hornig

With its 1802 ccm two-cylinder Boxer engine, the new BMW R18 is the highest-capacity Boxer BMW Motorrad has ever built and, at the same time, offers immense power (67 kW/91 HP) and a relaxed driving experience. We added some additional highlights to the classically beautiful Cruiser by mounting some Customizing accessory parts.

To make cruising with the BMW R18 even more enjoyable and comfortable, we upholstered the driver and passenger seat of our motorcycle. We relocated the BMW emblem, which is by default positioned in the rear section of the driver seat, to the front section of the passenger seat to avoid painful pressure in the driver’s tailbone area. Moreover, we used two different types of synthetic leather and quilting to give the seat design of our BMW R18 a particularly extraordinary look.

The mounted Sissybar also contributes significantly to a comfortable driving experience – for the passenger who can relax and lean back on the passenger seat thanks to the backrest as well as for the driver who knows that his passenger has a safe sitting position. We re-designed the backrest of our Sissybar (special production) in order to create a visual highlight here, too.

Even the most comfortable cruiser sometimes desires some acceleration – no problem for the powerful BMW R18! We have installed a tinted touring screen, which reduces the wind pressure on the driver, so that the driving experience is not disturbed by excessive headwind. The tail rising kit we installed ensures a more dynamic sitting and riding height. By raising the rear by 15mm, the bike's wheelbase is shortened to achieve agile and sportier handling.

To protect the “Big Boxer” engine, we mounted sturdy, black custom-look crash bars which avoid damages of the engine without disturbing the visual appearance of the BMW R18. The rider can put his feet on special removable non-slip rubber pads while driving. In order to protect the cooler of the motorcycle against damages, we developed a special cooler grid made of aluminum for the R18 which is available in silver or black color.

In order to have enough storage space for luggage on longer tours, our BMW R18 was equipped with black, lockable saddlebags made of leather. Those bags have a capacity of 17 liters each and are mounted on the motorcycle by means of a special support. Moreover, we developed a specific tank bag for the BMW R18 which is extendable and thus has a capacity of 10-15 liters. The fixation of the tank bag can be done by suckers or magnets.

We also mounted some aluminum accessory parts on our BMW R18: The oil filler plug, which can only be opened with a T45 Torx key to impede unauthorized opening of the oil plug, and the center cap top yoke with emblem which makes the handlebar area of the R18 look better. Thanks to our adjustable license plate bracket made of stainless steel, the license plate of the motorcycle does not have to be drilled and by means of our RAM GPS support in combination with a clamp and a RAM plate you can mount many different navigation devices on the motorcycle.

The Remus CUSTOM V2 exhaust is not only beautiful to the eye, but also offers an impressive sound and a great power delivery and thus is another highlight of our BMW R18. To make our cruiser stand out of the crowd even more, we put pin stripes on the front mudguard based on the model of the rear mudguard and the tank. These decorative lines are drawn manually and a time expenditure of approx. 2 weeks must be reckoned with.
