The new BMW R18

2020-04-09 - traditional, yet modern

With the R18, BMW Motorrad is entering new terrain concerning the cruiser area of the US market and yet the traditional brand has refocused on the design characteristics of its own history.

The "Big Boxer", which has a volume of 1802 cubic centimeters, was especially developed for this new motorcycle. However, it continues the legacy of the air-cooled boxer engines. The heart of the BMW R18 impresses with its peak output of 67 kW (91 hp) at 4750 rotations and particularly with 150 Nm of torque being continuously available over the whole speed range of 2.000 to 4.000 rpm. The boxer engine is integrated in a double-loop steel tube frame. This construction keeps alive the memory of the BMW R5 that was launched in 1936. The rear swingarm, made of steel or cast iron and forged parts, can be seen as a reminiscence of the R5. Not only the pear-drop tank and the open-running driveshaft, but also for example the pinstriped paintwork (factory option) undeniably indicatesthe charm of past times. Here, however, the following principle applies: traditional, yet modern, thanks to the LED headlight.
Behind the steel sheet sleeves the telescopic fork with a directly mounted central suspension strut, responsible for the corresponding suspension, is concealed - without any electronics.
The twin disc brake at the front and the single disc brake at the rear with a diameter of 300 millimetres block the wire-spoked wheels.
The low seating position together with the footrests that are placed directly behind the cylinders ("mid mounted footpeg" position), should ensure a comfortable and reaction-enhancing driving. The three riding modes "Rain", "Roll" and "Rock" or the Automatic Stability Control ASC, which come as standard, contribute to this joyful driving.
The new BMW R18 attracts individualists in particular as it can be modified or equipped with accessories with no great effort.
