Cardan Oil Change

2026-01-26 - on a BMW Motorcycle

Hello everyone!

Welcome to a new DIY tip from Hornig. Today we're focusing on the longevity of your drivetrain: changing the final drive oil.

First, we prepare for draining. Place an empty container under the drain plug. Make sure the container is large enough to hold the entire amount of oil and that the old oil will be disposed of properly later.

Loosen the lower drain plug and let the old final drive oil drain completely. Ideally, it should still be warm, as this will make it drain more easily and completely.

While the remaining oil is dripping, we'll take care of the drain plug. Tip: Many drain plugs have a magnet on the inside. Clean it thoroughly to remove any metal shavings.

Now for the seal replacement: Be sure to replace the O-ring on the drain plug with a new one! For easier installation and a perfect fit, you can lightly oil the O-ring.

Next, remove the upper filler plug. Clean it as well and fit it with a new copper washer.

Once all the old oil has drained out, reinstall the drain plug and tighten it to the manufacturer's specified torque.

Now for filling: Fill the new final drive oil into a syringe or a special oil filling aid. Pay close attention to the viscosity specified by the manufacturer and – very importantly – the exact fill quantity.

Fill the correct amount through the upper opening into the final drive.

Once the correct fill level is reached, clean the opening and install the filler plug with the new copper washer.

Done! With this simple step, you'll ensure maximum value retention and smooth running for your BMW. You can find all the necessary seals and oils of the highest quality in our Hornig Shop. If this video helped you, please give us a like and subscribe to the channel. See you in the next video!
