The new BMW R1300GS opens a new chapter

2023-10-02 - the most powerful BMW boxer engine in series production ever

With over four decades of history, the BMW GS with its boxer engine is the unchallenged number one for motorcycle enthusiasts. To maintain this position, BMW Motorrad has carried out an almost complete redesign of the new R1300GS, resulting in an astonishing weight reduction of 12 kg.

The centrepiece of the motorcycle is once again the legendary two-cylinder boxer engine. It has been completely redesigned and is more compact than ever before. With a displacement of 1,300 cm³, it delivers an impressive 107 kW (145 hp) at 7,750 rpm and a maximum torque of 149 Nm at 6,500 rpm, making it the most powerful BMW boxer engine ever in series production.

The chassis of the R1300GS has also been completely redesigned. A sheet metal shell main frame provides better space optimization and higher stiffness values compared to the previous model. The rear frame is now made of aluminium die casting. The new EVO Telelever front wheel guide with flex element and the revised EVO Paralever rear wheel guide contribute to improved steering precision and ride stability.

The new R1300GS offers a new electronic suspension system called Dynamic Suspension Adjustment (DSA) as optional equipment ex works. This system dynamically adjusts damping and spring rate based on the selected riding mode, road conditions, and riding manoeuvres while automatically compensating for changes in load.

In addition, there are adaptive vehicle height control and sport suspension available as optional features. The adaptive vehicle height control adjusts the vehicle height according to the operating conditions without compromising on ride dynamics. The sport suspension provides additional suspension travel and is optimized for off-road riding.

BMW R1300GS features four riding modes, including the new "Enduro" mode for off-road adventures. The other riding modes are "Rain," "Road," and "Eco," which optimizes maximum fuel efficiency and range.

The lighting system includes a Matrix LED headlight for bright and clear visibility. State-of-the-art LED lighting units, including integrated turn signals in the handguards, complement the lighting concept. With the optional "Headlight Pro" feature, the light automatically adjusts its angle in corners, enhancing visibility during turns.

The new R1300GS is equipped with the Riding Assistant option, which offers Active Cruise Control (ACC), front collision warning, and lane change warning. ACC allows the setting of the driving speed and the distance to the vehicle in front. The front collision warning with brake intervention helps to prevent collisions and to reduce the severity of accidents. The lane change warning supports safe overtaking manoeuvres.

The motorcycle is available in various versions, including the base model, Triple Black, GS Trophy, and Option 719 Tramuntana. The new design combines tradition and compactness, while the aluminium tank gives the motorcycle a dynamic appearance.
