Hello and welcome! Welcome to our Hornig Mechanic Tips.
The oil level – essential for your engine's longevity. But how do you measure it correctly? Let's start with the preparations that are the same for all models.
Tip in advance: Make sure to place your motorcycle on the center stand or a suitable lifter so it stands absolutely level. Then let the engine warm up. After that, switch it off and give it about 10 minutes to cool down. Only then do we measure the oil level.
Let's start with measuring on our BMW 2-cylinder engines. Here we use the classic dipstick.
Unscrew the dipstick and wipe it clean carefully.
Now insert it back into the opening until it seats – important: don't screw it in! Then pull it out again and read the level. It should be between the minimum and maximum markings.
With the BMW boxer engine, checking is even easier. Here the oil level is checked conveniently and quickly through the oil sight glass.
The oil level should ideally be in the upper third of the sight glass, but never exceed the maximum mark.
If your oil sight glass already shows signs of age or cracks and readability is impaired, you can quickly and easily purchase a new, perfectly fitting replacement glass in our online shop.
A correctly measured oil level is a small but important contribution to maintaining your bike.
