Changing the Air Filter

2026-01-05 - on a BMW Motorcycle

Hello everyone! Welcome to a new DIY tip from Hornig. Today we're taking care of your motorcycle's "lungs": changing the air filter.

A clean air filter is essential for optimal performance and efficient fuel consumption. If it's clogged, your BMW will noticeably suffer. What you'll need today: The new, high-quality air filter from Hornig and the necessary tools for removing the fairing – usually Torx or Allen wrenches.

To access the filter, we need to expose some parts on most BMW models. We'll first remove the seats and then the tank fairing. Be careful not to damage any clips or paint.

Important: Depending on the BMW model, the air filter may be located in a different place, for example, under the tank or on the side. But don't worry: The procedure for changing it is always the same!

The air filter box is now located under the tank fairing. Open the designated latches or screws.

Remove the old, dirty air filter. You'll often see immediately how much dust and dirt it has accumulated over time.

Very important step: Before installing the new filter, please thoroughly clean the air filter box! Remove dust, sand, leaves, or other contaminants. A vacuum cleaner or a clean cloth will do the trick.

Now install the new air filter. Make sure it's seated correctly so that it seals properly and no unfiltered air enters the engine.

The replacement is complete. Now we reassemble all the fairing parts in reverse order. Make sure to tighten all the screws and clips correctly so that nothing rattles on your next ride.
