Hello everyone!
Welcome to Hornig's DIY tips. Today, we're focusing on your safety: We'll be changing the brake pads, cleaning the pistons, and checking the brake discs. What you'll need: New brake pads, brake cleaner, fine wet/dry sandpaper, a tube of our high-quality anti-squeal ceramic paste, and the appropriate tools. Good brakes are essential. Before installing new pads, we'll check the brake disc.
The minimum thickness in millimeters is indicated on every brake disc. Check this thickness at several points on the disc using a micrometer. If the measured value is below the minimum, the disc must also be replaced! First, we loosen the small spring and then the brake caliper from the fork. Important: Place something under the caliper to prevent it from hitting the rim and damaging it. We'll leave the old brake pads in the caliper. Now, gently pump the brake lever to extend the brake pistons a little further. This will make them easier to clean. Remove the retaining pin and spring, and take out the old brake pads. Now for cleaning the pistons: Spray the pistons with brake cleaner and clean them with fine sandpaper. This removes any caked-on dirt and brake dust that impairs their function. If necessary, clean them again with compressed air. Dry the pistons, then apply a little WD-40 or a similar light oil to a rag and carefully lubricate the pistons. Now, push the pistons back into the caliper evenly – but be careful that no piston falls out completely! It's best to use a tool that pushes both pistons in simultaneously. Clean and lightly sand the pin and spring as well, so that they sit cleanly in the guide.
Clean and lightly sand the pin and spring so that they sit cleanly in the guide. Now our ceramic paste comes into play to prevent squeaking and ensure smooth operation. Apply a thin layer to the back and sides of the brake pads. Also apply a thin layer to the pin. Insert the new, prepared pads, insert the pin, and don't forget the retaining clip at the end! Reattach the brake caliper to the fork and tighten the bolts to the correct torque. Very important: Before riding, pump the handbrake lever until the pads are firmly seated against the brake disc and you feel a firm pressure point. Full braking power is only achieved after the pads have been bedded in! With this care, you guarantee optimal braking performance. All replacement parts, from the paste to the pads, are available in our usual high-quality and perfectly fitting product in the Hornig Shop!
