Engine Oil and Oil Filter Change

2026-05-26 - on a BMW Motorcycle

Hello everyone! Welcome to a new DIY tip from Hornig. Today we're tackling the most important life insurance for your engine: the oil change!

What you'll need: A new oil filter from Hornig, new engine oil with the viscosity specified by the manufacturer, a suitable oil filter wrench, a torque wrench, and a new gasket for the oil drain plug.
Before we begin, the motorcycle must be at operating temperature. This makes draining the old oil easier.
Place the motorcycle on its paddock stand or center stand so that it is upright. Then place the oil drain pan underneath.
… Loosen the oil drain plug and let the old oil drain completely into the pan. Caution!

While the oil drains, thoroughly clean the oil drain plug and have the new gasket or sealing ring ready.
Now it's time for the oil filter. Using the appropriate oil filter wrench, loosen it and carefully unscrew it. A little oil will still leak out.
Very important: Check the opening on the engine! The rubber gasket of the old filter can sometimes be stuck. This must be completely removed, otherwise the new filter won't seal properly.
Clean the sealing surface on the engine. Our Hornig oil filters come with a new gasket already installed. Tip: Rub the new gasket with a little fresh oil before installation – this makes installation easier and ensures a better seal.

Install the new oil filter and tighten it to the correct torque using the oil filter wrench.
Now reinstall the oil drain plug with the new gasket and tighten it to the torque specified by the manufacturer.
Now fill with new oil! Be sure to use the manufacturer's recommended engine oil and make sure to add the correct amount. A funnel is very helpful to prevent spills.
Once everything is reassembled, run the engine briefly to circulate the oil. Then turn off the engine, wait ten minutes, and park the motorcycle upright.

Check the oil level at the sight glass. If necessary, add oil up to the mark. Make sure the motorcycle is completely upright while doing this. Done!
