On this page, you will find all essential information about our service intervals and maintenance recommendations for the BMW R 1200 GS (2004–2012), R 1200 GS Adventure (2005–2013), HP2 Enduro, and HP2 Megamoto.

Maintenance Schedule & Service Tips

10,000 km / 30,000 km / 50,000 km / 70,000 km / 90,000 km inspections (break-in and routine maintenance):

  • Diagnosis with BMW Motorrad diagnostic tool, engine oil and filter change, final drive oil check, inspection of brakes, tire tread and pressure, lighting and electronics check. These tasks are included in the initial 1,000 km inspection and recur at every 10,000 km interval – e.g. 10,000 km, 30,000 km, 50,000 km ...

Major service every 20,000 km (e.g. 20,000 km, 40,000 km, 60,000 km, 80,000 km, 100,000 km ...):

  • Additional tasks include valve clearance check/adjustment, spark plug replacement, air filter replacement, optionally the V-belt replacement (every 6 years), final drive oil change, and full inspection of wear parts.

Time-based maintenance: Even if mileage is low, service is due annually or every 10,000 km. Brake fluid should be changed after the first year and then every two years – in line with BMW service standards.

Special Campaigns & Recalls

  • Fuel pump & fuel system: Global recall for models from 2005 due to cracks in the plastic pump/flange causing possible fuel leaks. BMW resolved this free of charge (2006–2011 R1200GS, 2006–2010 HP2, etc.).
  • ABS sensor at rear wheel: 2004 recall due to defective ABS sensor O-ring seals causing potential oil leakage. The O-ring needed replacement.
  • Aluminum rear wheel flange: For models up to 2008, BMW replaced porous aluminum flanges with reinforced steel versions as part of a service campaign. Affected models: R1200GS 2004–2010, HP2 2006–2008.

Technical Reference Data

  • Engine oil: approx. 4 liters of 15W-50 (air-/oil-cooled), final drive oil approx. 180 ml 75W-90 GL-5
  • Tire pressure (solo): front approx. 2.2–2.5 bar, rear 2.5–2.9 bar (depending on load)
  • Brake fluid: DOT 4; recommended change every two years
