LEDs, Lenses & Bulbs for your BMW R 1300 R

Suitable light sources are crucial for the visibility, safety and appearance of your BMW R 1300 R. On this page you will find information on classic bulbs, modern LED bulbs, reflectors and model-specific mounts — plus notes on approval and installation. Hornig offers advice, suitable products and professional installation.

What types of light sources are there?

In the motorcycle sector you will generally encounter three variants: classic incandescent/halogen bulbs, Xenon/HID and modern LED light sources. LED bulbs often offer higher efficiency, longer service life and brighter, whiter light; however the choice must match the headlight optics (reflector/projector) and the electrical system. On some models standard sockets are common for fog, parking or license plate lamps, while indicators and brake lights use LEDs or LED equivalents.

Legal & approval

Important: In the EU/Germany retrofitted headlight light sources must comply with the applicable ECE standards or have an approval (e.g. ECE for LED headlights / approved retrofit solutions). Non-approved LED retrofits can cause glare or jeopardize insurance coverage/legal operation. There are now approved, road-legal LED retrofits — pay attention to approval markings (E-Mark) and, if applicable, a General Type Approval (ABG) / General Operating Permit (ABE).

Reflectors, headlight optics & technical compatibility

Whether an LED bulb produces the correct light distribution in your headlight depends on the reflector shape or projector optics. LEDs with an unsuitable design often produce messy low/high beam patterns and glare. Reputable manufacturers (e.g. OSRAM, Philips) now offer road-approved replacement lamps or retrofit kits; check manufacturer specifications and approvals before retrofitting.

Model-specific mounts, adapters & brackets — coming soon

We are expanding our range: Hornig will soon add model-specific mounts and installation kits for the BMW R1300R (e.g. adapters for indicator LEDs, specific mounts for auxiliary LED headlights and reflectors). These mounts simplify installation, ensure the correct seating of the light sources and reduce the need for improvised adapters — thereby better preserving beam pattern and approvals.

Practical: which LEDs/bulbs are recommended?

  • For position/parking lights, license plate and interior: use high-quality LED modules with CAN compatibility (for vehicles with a CAN bus).
  • For indicators/rear lights: replacement LEDs or complete LED tail/indicator modules, possibly with appropriate resistors/relays to prevent hyper-flashing.
  • For main headlights: use only approved retrofit kits or manufacturer-approved LED units — classic lamp swaps (halogen→LED) are risky without approval.

Installation notes & safety

  • Before replacing: check the operating manual — note socket types and electrical specifications.
  • For LED retrofits: look for E-marking / relevant approval markings and, if necessary, plan for inspection/approval by TÜV.
  • Electronics: on CAN bus systems or switched connectors, error messages can occur — use suitable CAN adapters/load resistors or have the installation carried out by professionals.
  • Hornig offers professional installation, wobble and functional tests as well as (on request) TÜV consultation to ensure beam pattern and approval are correct.

FAQ — frequently asked questions

Can I simply replace halogen with LED?

Not without further ado: a legal replacement requires that the LED system is approved for your headlight optics. Otherwise there is a risk of glare, a poor low-beam pattern and legal problems.

How do I recognize approved LED retrofits?

Look for E-marking (E-Mark), references to the ECE standard and manufacturer documentation or ABG / General Type Approval.
