A Biker Bell, also known as a Guardian Bell or Gremlin Bell, is a special good-luck charm for motorcyclists. According to an old biker tradition, the small bell accompanies the rider on their journeys and protects them from the so-called “Road Gremlins” - mischievous little spirits who, according to legend, are responsible for breakdowns, mishaps and trouble on the road. The sound of the bell is said to drive these spirits away or capture them.

According to tradition, there are three important rules to ensure that the Biker Bell can fulfil its purpose as a good-luck charm.

1. The Biker Bell must be given as a gift
The most important rule: A Biker Bell should not be bought for yourself. It is traditionally given as a gift by another biker, a friend, a partner or someone close to you. According to the tradition, the gift transfers the giver’s good wishes and positive energy to the rider. A Biker Bell bought for oneself is therefore not considered a genuine good-luck charm according to this tradition. This is precisely what makes a Biker Bell such a great gift for a motorcyclist - for a birthday, at the start of a new riding season, to celebrate passing a motorcycle licence test, or simply as a way of wishing someone safe travels wherever the road may take them.

2. Attach it as low as possible on the motorcycle
The Biker Bell should be attached to the lowest possible point of the motorcycle frame, as close to the road as possible. The reason lies in the legend: the mischievous spirits are said to live close to the ground and try to cling to passing motorcycles. A low-hanging bell is therefore supposed to catch them as early as possible. It is also important that the Biker Bell can swing and ring freely. It should be securely attached and must not strike other components or come into contact with the ground or moving parts while riding. The exact mounting point may vary depending on the motorcycle.

3. Remove the bell when selling the motorcycle
According to tradition, a Biker Bell belongs to the rider, not the motorcycle. If the motorcycle is sold or replaced, the bell should therefore be removed and kept. It can then be used on the rider's next motorcycle. Tradition also says that a found or lost Biker Bell should not simply be picked up and reused. It is considered to have already “done its job”. A new Biker Bell should once again be given as a gift, allowing the tradition to begin anew.
